USM in Three Living Spaces
The same blue modules, three different pieces of furniture: invited by USM, Swiss interior designer Stephanie Aebischer has created three furniture pieces from identical USM Haller elements to suit different living situations.
Just how much versatility do three blue USM Haller modules offer? Stephanie Aebischer put them to the test. Through targeted modifications such as rearranging the modules, removing panels or adding drop-down doors, she created three different pieces of furniture using the same elements. Each design is tailored to the architecture of its environment and the people who live there: a period flat, a new build and a family home.
1) Functionality for a child’s bedroom
An apartment in Bern, a family with a toddler and a newborn: amidst an eventful and lively daily life, a USM Haller chest of drawers brings a sense of calm to the child’s bedroom – not as a design piece, but as a functional backbone and a colourful way to keep things tidy.

2) A statement piece in an old building
High ceilings, stucco, herringbone parquet flooring, and a fireplace with a gold-plated surround: in this period flat, a young couple turns living into a joyful interplay between poetry and precision– an apartment that is curated, not simply decorated. The USM Haller modular furniture system instantly takes on the appearance of a mobile stage on which objects and their environment are showcased; yet, with its clean lines, it is equally capable of being showcased itself. Or, in the designer’s own words: “USM acts as a counterweight to the eclectic. It creates space without filling it.”
3) Clarity in a new-build
Clean, minimalist lines; a tonal palette ranging from slate to anthracite; a selection of design classics from Le Corbusier and Breuer to Eileen Gray – this is the home of a couple who see minimalism not as a sacrifice, but as a way of making space for the things that really matter. At the heart of this design-forward setting is the reimagined modular USM trio, which doesn’t need to take centre stage to make an impact. “USM Haller is a stylistic continuation of the flowing line; functional but not static,” says Aebischer, describing its integration into this calm, carefully composed living space.
