An Office for All Seasons

How to balance company legacy with a more open, informal identity? This was the central question behind the new Agrosemillas office building. With four bright-green repurposed shipping containers as its roof, the construction provides both contrast and continuity, with some help from USM.

The cycle of change

Based in the Cuenca region of Spain, Agrosemillas’ headquarters are one of a kind. Yet the construction blends perfectly into its agro-industrial environment. As an agricultural company, its work rhythms follow the cycles of the harvest, alternating quieter periods with phases of continuous activity. Therefore, they needed a workspace that is as flexible as the seasons and can accommodate a wide range of users – from warehouse workers to engineers involved in research and innovation – whose schedules shift throughout the year.

Contrast and continuity

This context is reflected in both the architecture and interior of the building, designed by the Madrid-based spatial design studio Impepinable. Its workspaces support focused work, meetings, and technical development amid the noise, dust, and logistical intensity outside. The new building was conceived as a strategic opportunity to accompany a new phase for the company. While the architecture represents a more open, youthful, and informal identity, continuity with the company’s legacy is ensured through the unapologetic use of its signature colours – green and yellow – throughout.

Built for flexibility

The front of the building is punctuated by four large circular windows with manually operated shutters that function almost like light switches, protecting the workspaces from the extremes of the seasons and rain. When fully shut, plenty of natural light still enters from above. Its roof consists of four bright-green repurposed shipping containers, opened on two sides, functioning as skylights. Outside on the roof, strips for experimental crops are incorporated into the design, physically linking research, production, and architecture.

Another layer of continuity comes with the use of modular USM Haller furniture in Golden Yellow throughout the workspaces, a perfect match for both the company’s brand palette and the industrial, minimalist character of the building. Much like Agrosemillas adapts to the rhythms of its production processes, USM adapts to changing workplace needs, providing organisation and flexibility for each team within the company.
