The benefits of a family space that can adapt and evolve with changing needs are obvious - especially if you also have a growing family. If your furniture can grow and be reconfigured, you will never need to replace it.
You might think that the limits of this type of flexibility are the built-in furniture in your kitchen, bathroom and other rooms. But with USM Haller furniture, you get the best of both worlds: the flexibility of flexible furnishings combined with strength and durability.
When his family moved into a new apartment in Morioka, northern Japan, Mr. N had a vision for his new home: modern, spacious and easily adaptable to the changing needs of his growing family. He called on an interior designer, Mr. Ochi of Club8Studio, and an independent architect, Yo Otsuka, to give free rein to their creativity on a file whose only requirement was that no built-in furniture be used.
The architectural duo made a quick decision: instead of the standard built-in furniture, they would use USM modular furniture. The benefits of this choice were obvious - USM furniture is timeless furniture that Mr. N could still enjoy in twenty years. After choosing the furniture at the beginning of the project, the architects were able to carefully plan the layout of the rooms and the traffic patterns, making sure that they were perfectly adapted to the way the family would use their home.
A key challenge in this area has been the kitchen, a room where most homes use built-in furniture because of its robustness and reliability. They designed custom USM Haller furniture for storage and work surfaces along the walls of the kitchen - which proved to be as durable as the permanent furniture they replaced. They also designed a mobile island for the center of the room, offering ample extra storage space that opens on both sides and an additional worktop for home cooking.
The kitchen features are designed in white and beige, to maximize the sense of space and create an open and bright atmosphere. In order to bring a stylistic unity to the house, the same colors were chosen for the furniture of the laundry room and the children's room. In the bathroom, the USM furniture has once again been able to naturally replace built-in furniture such as the one under sink. For other rooms throughout the house, including the stairwell and the cloakroom, more colourful shades were used.
Perhaps the biggest attraction for the family is the promise that, in case of moving, she can take all the furniture with her and adapt them to the environment of her new home. It will also leave a blank space to the family who will buy the house, which can create a new environment, perfectly suited to its own needs.
