Co-Working in the Former Wasserwerk Club

Bands like The Prodigy and The Roots used to perform here – the Werkspace was a club for twenty years. “Anyone who didn't party here before would never guess that this place was once a club,” says Christoph Haller, Werkspace’s co-founder. His desk now sits where the stage once stood.

Anyone who didn't party here before would never guess that this place was once a club.

Five companies are behind the Werkspace project: Kung Fu Burger, the club Bonsoir, the event agency Rebelmind Syndicate, the bar Propeller and the consulting agency Yuhzimi. They've worked together on projects for many years and, until now, were spread out in different offices across the city. That made exchanging information difficult, so they went on the hunt for a place where they could work together.

Co-working should feel completely natural, not forced.

They needed only half the workstations for themselves, so they rented out the other half to entrepreneurs and freelancers. From real estate brokers and event planners to photographers and writers – almost every industry is represented here. This benefits everyone by expanding networks, exchanging information and inspiring ideas. However, everyone can still work in peace and quiet thanks to USM Privacy Panels, which can be used to create individual spaces instantly – right in the middle of a communal area. If someone needs to cool off, they can jump in the nearby Aare river.

Haller is planning on purchasing old telephone booths for Werkspace, so soon everyone will be able to make calls completely undisturbed and in style. And that’s not all the co-working space has to offer: just across the street is the Bern Bear Park, where anyone who wants to relax can watch bears playing.
