USM Modular Furniture: Triple presence at Biennale Venezia

USM is present with three sponsorships from different countries at this year's Biennale: Salon Suisse from Switzerland, Fundacio Mies van der Rohe from Spain, Deutscher Werkbund from Germany. All three installations will take place in beautiful palaces in the city. You will find a description of each exhibition and USM's participation below.

Salon Suisse
The next 100 Years - Scenarios for an Alpine City State

The modern nation state of Switzerland was founded in 1848 as an island of liberal thinking in a reactionary Europe. Over the course of a few decades, the infrastructures and institutions from which the nation still profits today were put in place - railroads, banks, the postal system, or the Federal Institute of Technology. Along the way, the nation managed to reconcile urban and rural interests. Meanwhile, Europe experienced several wars, formed a union, and yet faces an uncertain common future. The world has become globalized and urbanized and yet is increasingly debating its limits. At the heart of the current discussion is the role and future of cities, home to more than half of humanity.

Salon Suisse is held at the Palazzo Trevisan

In this context, what would a contemporary conception for Switzerland be? If it had to be founded today, what would be our aims, opportunities, concerns, and how would we architects give them form? The Salon Suisse, hosted in the Palazzo Trevisan degli Ulivi in Venice, one of the first European city states, will be modelled after a Constitutional Assembly. In a thought experiment on critical urbanity working with three groups of people - academics, professionals, and citizens - we will develop possible scenarios for our Alpine City State organized around the fundamentals that ultimately concern us all - Design, Build and Use.

Salone Suisse - The next 100 Years, Scenarios for an Alpine City State

"Salon Suisse" is a talks and event programme complementing Switzerland's national participation at the 14th International Architecture Exhibition - la Biennale di Venezia. It is initiated by the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia.

Within the Salon Suisse the Swiss architecture magazine "werk, bauen + wohnen" has a special exhibition to celebrate their 100th anniversary. All the hardback copies from the last century are presented in a special library for which USM Switzerland loans the furniture.

Fundacio Mies Van Der Rohe
Made in Europe

The exhibition "Made in Europe" aims to show the importance of the last 25 years of architecture in Europe based on the data from the archive gathered by the Fundació Mies Van der Rohe. The installation is going to present a selection of 193 models and a visualization of the 2500 proposals that conform the 25 years of awards, representing a curate selection of the best works of architecture.

Mies van der Rohe Award - Made in Europe

The cooperation between the Fundació Mies van der Rohe and USM goes back many years. With the support of the European Commission the Fundació has been organizing the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture - "Mies van der Rohe Award" since 1988. In 2013 the prize celebrated its 25th anniversary, creating the biggest archive of Contemporary Architecture in Europe, having collected more than 2,500 projects and 230 models. For this purpose USM hast delivered the structures to showcase the models in Barcelona.

Deutscher Werkbund
This is modern

The German Werkbund shows in celebration of the 14th architectural Biennale 2014 and the centennial jubilee of the German Werkbund exhibition 1914 at Cologne an exhibition at Venice to the leading question of contemporary architecture and design. 22 present architecture offices in the public perception in Germany were pleased to show their position and approach through a draft assignment. The task consisted of an examination of the German pavilion at Venice whose wrecking has been called for by the president of the federal Chamber of architects. The building has actually been conceptually classed as run down and for this the architects were given the possibility for a new construction building at the same place. The question according to the fundamentals of contemporary architecture coalescs in this case with the question of knowledge benefits of 100 years of modernism in search of an adequate position within the proper architectural work, self-conception and integration of the proper work into the context of further organizational tasks.

Concept and responsible curators: Kai Gehrmann, Paul Kahlfeldt, Claudia Kromrei, Hans-Dieter Nägelke

Within the exhibition USM Germany loans the furniture to display the architect models.
