1885   Founding of a hardware and locksmith’s business in Münsingen, Switzerland by Ulrich Schärer.

ca. 1920   Manufacture of window fittings begins.

1926   Construction of new workshops at Bahnhofplatz in Münsingen, Switzerland.

ca. 1929   Robert, Paul and Hans Schärer take over the business. The privately owned company becomes the general partnership U. Schärer Söhne (father of Veronika, Robert, Hansueli and Paul Schärer).

Post 1946   Boom in the post war years; introduction of metal work and sheet metal working started.

1961   Paul Schärer, junior, Dipl. Ing. ETHZ, joins USM.
The decision is made to move the company to Thunstrasse 55 in Münsingen, with the subsequent architectural commission for the new factory and administration buildings commissioned to Fritz Haller, then an architect in Solothurn (CH), later to become Prof. Dr. h.c., at the University of Karlsruhe (D).

1963   In collaboration with Professor Fritz Haller, the USM Haller furniture system is developed, initially for the offices in Münsingen.

1965   Official opening of the new building in Münsingen.

1967   The general partnership becomes a family-owned joint stock company.

1975 Founding of USM U. Schärer Söhne GmbH, Bühl in Baden-Baden, Germany. Extension buildings on the production site at Münsingen

1985   USM’s 100 year anniversary.

1990   Paul Schärer becomes the major company shareholder.

1992   Production of window fittings stops in focus of USM Modular Furniture systems.

1993   The fourth generation enters the family firm, with son Alexander Schärer, Dipl. Ing. EPFL.

1994   Founding of USM U. Schärer Fils SA in Charnay-lès Mâcon, France.

1995   Founding of USM U. Schaerer Sons Inc., New York, USA.

1998   Opening of the first permanent USM showroom in  Hamburg, Germany.

2001   The USM Haller is included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art MoMA in New York.

2002   Opening of the new US headquarters and showroom in SoHo, New York.

2005   The administrative offices move to Münsingen.

2008   Subsidiary USM U. Schaerer Sons K.K. opens in Tokyo, Japan

2009   Alterations to the offices of USM U. Schärer Söhne GmbH in Bühl (DE).
